The fortunes of both India and Australia oscillated back and forth wildly on Day 1. At 119 for 1, Australia had edged ahead. However, a steady fall of wickets saw the visitors slide down to 205 for 9. And then the pace spearhead of the tourists, Starc, decided to use his long handle to club Ravindra Jadeja, Ishant and Co. for a stream of boundaries and crack an entertaining fifty.
On a sporting track, Australia wouldn’t be too displeased to end the day on 256 for 9. Earlier, Matt Renshaw’s patient-vigil at the crease had given Australia a solid foundation only for the spin troika of Jadeja, Ashwin and Jayant to rip through the cream of the batting line-up. Umesh, too, bowled a masterful spell and snared four wickets. India’s fielding too was largely on the money. Saha, in particular, had a great day behind the stumps.
