Was it the right decision or not for India to vote against Jerusalem?

Along with 128 other countries, India had voted against US’s decision of accepting Jerusalem. But was right keeping in mind other factors?

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj created a flutter on Thursday when she asked All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) leader M Badruddin Ajmal to vote for the BJP after he thanked her for opposing the US decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Ajmal, a Lok Sabha MP, had reached out to Swaraj on Twitter with the message: “Thanks, Government of India for voting in the UN against US division of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.”

Sushma Swaraj took to her Twitter handle to reply

The resolution that was passed by a two-thirds majority in the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday demanded Washington comply with Security Council decisions against changing the status of Jerusalem and declared the US and Israeli action on the city “null and void”.

128 countries, including India, voted for the resolution, while nine countries joined the US and Israel in voting against it. An unusually large number — 35 countries — abstained.
Following this, BJP MP Subramanian Swamy went against the party line and condemned the government’s move to vote against key allies US and Israel.

“India has made a huge mistake by not voting with US and Israel on US decision to choose West Jerusalem as the location for its Embassy,” Swamy tweeted.

A long-time supporter of Israel, Swamy pointed out that Palestine had never supported India on the Kashmir issue, while Israel “has stood with India always.”
