The Japanese practice of nyotaimori – serving sushi on a naked body – is said to have its origins in the samurai period in Japan. In the words of chef Mike Keenan, “The naked sushi idea began during the samurai period in Japan. It was a subculture to the geishas. It would take place in a geisha house as a celebration after a victorious battle.”

Before becoming a living sushi platter, the person (usually a woman) is trained to lie down for hours without moving. She or he must also be able to withstand the prolonged exposure to the cold food. Before service, the individual is supposed to have taken a bath using a special fragrance-free soap and then finished off with a splash of cold water to chill the body down somewhat for the sushi.

The models on whom the food is served has to be physically attractive. One problem that is regularly faced with models is that they have to lie down in this position for a very long time. Usually, this type of dinner is served in public gatherings and these models have to be in one position for one to three hours. Cramping and a sore back are a common problem with the models.

Hot food is also served which increases the problems for the models. To ease the pain, before a model is sent for Nyotaimori, he/she is drenched in cold water so that it would ease the burning effect. The models are not allowed to talk to the customers. It is also noted that customers make indecent comments on the models but it does not happen regularly.

The income of Nyotaimori Models is very good. Some would say that it is one of the easiest ways to make money since models have to just lie down for an hour or three when food is being served on him/her. In the USA, the average amount made by the model can vary from $125-$180 (Rs. 8,350 to Rs 12,000) for one dinner!

Customers serve the food on a body and place that on an operating table for the diners’ delight. Everything within her is completely edible. Many countries have banned it. China banned it in 2005 due to public health reasons and imposed moral censorship issues. Many feminists have condemned this practice which displays female body as a mere presentation. However, this practice has been described as decadent, cruel, and objectifying by others in the world.
