In his first meeting with the India Unit, a new group of high-level Egyptian ministers chaired by his counterpart Mostafa Madbouly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed boosting commercial and economic connections with Egypt on Saturday. Seven Egyptian Cabinet members, led by Madbouly, attended Modi’s first meeting in Egypt, where he landed this afternoon after a three-day visit to the United States. The Prime Minister began by thanking Egypt for establishing the dedicated high-level India Unit and praising the government’s approach.
“Discussions focused on deepening cooperation across a range of areas including trade & investment, renewable energy, green hydrogen, IT, digital payment platforms, pharma, and people to people ties,” stated Arindam Bagchi, spokesman for the External Affairs Ministry, on Twitter. Egypt has long been one of India’s most important African trading partners. Despite the Covid-19 epidemic, bilateral trade between the two nations was USD 4.55 billion in 2018-19 and is expected to fall slightly to USD 4.15 billion in 2020-21.
