An Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer was trapped and arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) recently for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 1.25 crore from a hotelier in Navi Mumbai.
The officer namely Ashok Venkatesh Naik, is the Assistant Commissioner of Service Tax, LTU Audit in Mumbai. Naik reportedly demanded a bribe of Rs 12 crore from the proprietor of a hotel which faced an Enforcement Directorate (ED) inquiry, and promised to resolve the issue.
After the proprietors of the hotel filed a complaint, the CBI on Saturday evening laid a trap, and arrested Naik along with two others.
They were produced in a CBI court which sent them to the police custody remand till May 15. Incriminating documents and documents related to investments and properties worth crores were recovered during searches at the office and residence of Naik and the others accused.
