Kashmir: Army school to be renamed after Army Officer Ummer Fayaz

The army has decided to rename a school after Lieutenant Ummer Fayaz, who was abducted and later shot dead by a group of militants in south Kashmir. The school would be renamed ‘Lt. Ummer Goodwill School’. The announcement was made by Victor Force, General Officer Commanding (GOC) Major General B.S. Raju, a PTI report said.

Major General B S Raju met the family of the deceased on May 13.

The Army also handed over a cheque for Rs 75 lakh to the family. In addition to that, a cheque for Rs 1 lakh was also given to the family by the Rajputana Rifles.

Ummeer Fayaz belonged to the RAJRIF unit in Akhnoor and had gone to attend the wedding of his uncle’s daughter at Batapura near Behibagh on May 9. Ummeer Fayaz was abducted by terrorists while he was sitting with the bride. Martyr Ummeer Fayaz was unarmed.

According to ANI, the family did not approach the police or the Army as it was under the myth that terrorists would not harm a Kashmiri. Little did the family know that it will receive a bullet-riddled body the next morning. The mortal remains of Fayaz were sent for postmortem at the District Hospital in Shopian and later brought to Sursun district for burial. Fayaaz was buried with full military honors.

Lt. Fayaz from NDA was all set to head for the Young Officers Course in September. Not only Fayaz was a part of the Hockey Team of NDA but was also an excellent volleyball player, he was physically tough and the troops enjoyed his company, Army told news agency ANI.

According to the report, the officer was shot five times by the terrorists and his body was found lying by a local at Harman orchard. Police rushed to the spot after being informed of the incident.
