Lieutenant Ummer Fayaz Parray of 2 Rajputana Rifles was a bright young Indian Army officer from Jammu and Kashmir who was killed by terrorists in Shopian.
In the eyes of the stone-pelting youth and the Separatists of the Valley, terrorists like Burhan Wani are heroes, but Lt Ummer set an example of what a real hero means by joining the armed forces.
Lt Ummer, who hailed from Kulgam was the only son of his parents. His entire family is still in shock over the death of their brilliant and brave child.
His father, Fayaz Ahmad Parray, told Amar Ujala that that though the family didn’t want Lt Ummer to join the Army, the 22-year-old officer told his parents that it was his dream to join Indian Army.
Commissioned as a doctor, Lt Ummer had a bright career ahead, which was cut short on May 9 by terrorists – the very ignominious kind who are hailed as heroes by the worthless stone-pelters.
He was posted at Akhnoor and had taken a leave of one month to attend a cousin’s wedding. He was supposed to join duty on May 25.
Lamenting his son’s death, Ahmad Parray said that he is not grieving because his son became a martyr but wished that he hadn’t come home on leave – his first since commissioning.
At the same time, Ahmad Parray pointed out that no politician from the state turned up at his son’s funeral, while the Indian Army personnel not only attended but also extended all help to the family.
The Indian Army has also decided to rename the Army Goodwill School in honor of Lt Ummer.
Perhaps this is why a proud Ahmad Parray said that he wants his daughters to get a job in the Army.
The entire country mourned the death of Lt Ummer, but there was no word on condemnation from the Separatists or stone-pelters.
