Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened India’s longest bridge, Dhola-Sadiya Bridge in Assam today at the first of many events to celebrate the third anniversary of his government.
He named the bridge after Assamese icon Bhupen Hazarika. Sadiya was the birthplace of the maverick singer.
The Dhola-Sadiya bridge, in Tinsukia district which is 9.15 km-long bridge built over the Brahmaputra River will reduce travel time between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh by at least four hours.
It is strategic bridge costs about Rs.2056 crores that will provide efficient road connectivity to remote and backward areas which have poor road infrastructure.
“The bridge that you’ve been waiting for five decades is finally here… it will be known by the name of (singer) Bhupen Hazarika,” he said to loud cheers at a public rally.
The inauguration was done on Friday morning 10:45 am.
The bridge will also benefit the army, with convoys requiring less time to journey from Assam to the posts along the India-China border in Arunachal Pradesh.
The bridge is also expected to enhance India’s defence capabilities in the north-eastern region.
