IIT -Madras Beef Fest: Students protest against the attack on student

Huge protests took place outside the campus of IIT-Madras condemning the attack on a PhD scholar at the Institute yesterday by some students who were agitating against the “beef fest” which was organised on the campus on Sunday.

Students in the protest are seen marching to the IIT-Madras Dean’s office and demanding that the attackers involved be expelled.

R Sooraj, who is associated with the Ambedkar Periyar Study Circle, was allegedly assaulted on Tuesday by some students who claimed to be Sangh Parivar supporters, according to the victim’s associates.

The Revolutionary Students and Youth Front also protested against the attack on Sooraj.

Sooraj has alleged that a group of students who owe allegiance to the “right wing ideology” surrounded him when he was having lunch in the mess and beat him up on Tuesday.

A picture, purportedly that of Sooraj being wheeled into a hospital with a visible injury on his right eye, is doing the rounds on social media as well.

Eight students have been booked for allegedly beating up Sooraj. The accused have been booked under IPC Sections 147 (Punishment for rioting), 341 (Punishment for wrongful restraint), 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 506(1) (criminal intimidation).

The victim, whose right eye has been severely injured, has also been booked under IPC Section 324 (voluntarily causing hurt) and Section 341 (wrongful restraints).
