Bengali actor Vikram Chatterjee has been charged with ‘culpable homicide’ recently for the death of model and prime time host Sonika Chauhan, who was killed in an accident of Vikram’s car on April 29.

Vikram who was severely injured in the incident is currently out on bail.

A person is charged with ‘culpable homicide’ for an act which has resulted in a person’s death but is held not to amount to murder.

An Alipore court granted the police’s plea to charge him with ‘culpable homicide’ whose punishment can extend to 10 years in prison. Police claimed that evidence revealed the actor was aware of what he was doing.

“Chatterjee has been charged under Section 304 of the IPC after police received a forensic report that showed the speed of the car was between 95 to 115 km per hour a few seconds before the accident,” said Vishal Garg, Kolkata Police’s Joint Commissioner, Crime.

The actor was earlier booked for rash driving and negligence as he claimed he was not drunk at the time of the accident. However, it was later revealed from pictures that he was indeed holding alcohol in the party before the accident.

He later confessed of consuming alcohol but said that he was not drunk and the car was at normal speed.

Chatterjee was driving and Sonika was seated on the front seat when their SUV ran into a tree in South Kolkata in the wee hours of April 29.
