The accused in the murder of 23-year-old engineer Anjali Rathour was arrested by Noida Police from Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh, today. Ashwani Yadav, 24, was absconding since his name cropped up in the probe.
Anjali’s parents accused Yadav of the murder, whose name was also mentioned in the FIR registered at Sector 58 police station.
The 23-year-old woman was shot dead in the parking of Shatabdi Rail Vihar, in Noida’s Sector 62. The footage from a CCTV camera inside the building had revealed that she had been shot in the head at around 6.34 am. The footage also showed her being chased in the parking area by a man with a weapon pointed at her. However, the poor quality of the video prevented any identification of the accused.
According to the police, Yadav had studied BBA from Lovely Professional University in Jalandhar where Anjali did B Tech in electronics and communication. The two knew each other well for four years and were in a relationship. However, since January Anjali had been avoiding Yadav, and this ticked him off.
After Anjali’s family named Yadav as accused, the police had raided his house in Lajpat Nagar. Ashwani, however, managed to give the police a slip and fled.
On Wednesday, Anjali had called him first. The police believe that the accused later called her to the parking and killed her.
Yadav worked in a garments store which was closed in January 2017. The accused has reportedly told the police that Anjali was avoiding him as he lost his job.
