The Supreme Court refused to grant bail to former Calcutta High Court judge Justice CS Karnan and also refused to suspend Karnan’s 6 months jail sentence.
Karnan, Wednesday had moved the apex court seeking bail and suspension of the six-month sentence given to him.
Former Justice C S Karnan, who was on the run for 40 days, was arrested from a private guest house in Malumachampatti, Coimbatore, by West Bengal police on Tuesday.
On May 9, a seven-member constitution bench, headed by Chief Justice J.S. Khehar, had sentenced Justice Karnan, then sitting Calcutta HC judge, to six months imprisonment in a contempt case. He is the first sitting High Court judge to be sentenced to a jail term by the SC.
61-year-old Karnan, on May 10 disappeared after checking out of a government guesthouse in Chennai, allegedly without paying the bills.
