Huge fire erupts at Cairo’s popular Giza Zoo

Flames erupted inside the Giza Zoo in the early hours of Sunday after a wooden booth inside the iconic Cairo destination had caught fire.

The fire contained by civil forces reportedly erupted inside a wooden booth then extended to several trees nearby, security forces quoted by Egyptian media have said.

Social media users shared video footage of the flames.

No animals were harmed in the blaze and no evacuation was carried out, the sources added.

Opened in 1891, Giza Zoo is Egypt’s biggest and oldest zoological garden, containing a wide variety of animals and rare plants and trees from all over the world.

The zoo is a popular destination for Egyptians during Eid. Its administration said that the park will open its doors normally for visitors on Sunday, which marks Eid al-Fitr.
