GST: Double taxation for movie tickets

Consumer body, Coimbatore Consumer Cause (CCC), has asked the State Government to not only stop imposing entertainment tax on cinema tickets, but also the additional goods and services tax (GST) at 18 % and 28 %.

The introduction of GST, as stated by the Central Government, should have subsumed the entertainment tax, meaning there should be no separate levy of GST at 18 % for tickets priced less than ?100 and 28 % for tickets priced over ?100.

The enlistment would amount subjected to double taxation. The State Government should take note of this and initiate steps to have the ticket price reduced accordingly.

The proposed impose of 30 % entertainment tax by the local bodies would also amount to double taxation.

K. Kathirmathiyon, secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause said that the State Government had stopped collecting entertainment tax for movies with Tamil titles, but the cinemas continued to charge patrons.

This resulted in the customers paying tax and the cinemas collecting them but not transferring the same to the Government.
