Onam is all around the corner, the agriculture department has launched ‘Onathinu oru muram pachakkari’, a scheme which envisages mass cultivation of vegetables with the participation of 63 lakh families.
These families will be raising vegetables, required for the festival, in their backyards, on terraces and in grow bags.
Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the project on the premises of the Secretariat handing over a packet of vegetable seeds to an employee, and his cabinet colleagues planted seedlings at the small stretch of land near the Durbar Hall prepared for vegetable cultivation.
“Farming has to be promoted as a social responsibility,” said agriculture minister V S Sunil Kumar at the inaugural function.
