Calicut University celebrates Golden Jubilee

Calicut University who takes credit of changing the education standards of Malabar area of Kerala, this year celebrates its 50th anniversary.

The University which was presented tot he Northern Kerala by the then EMS ministry, which included the colleges from the districts Thrissur to Kasargod, came into being on 1968 July 23.

It was formed with the institutes and colleges from the districts of Thrissur, Kasargod, Calicut, Wayanad, Kannur and Palakkad.

During the first Communist tenure in 1957 the state, an idea was proposed for Malabar University, which will have the institutes in Malabar region under one varsity.

Later it was in 1968, after the report by a committee under Dr Samuel Matthai, did they decided to form The Calicut University, which began to function under Dr K.C Chacko. It began its full functioning as a varsity with UGC certification on August 12, 1968, in Calicut after being inaugurated by then Union Minister for Education, Triguna Sen.

Its first Vice Chancellor was M.M Ganiya.

Up till 1969, it was functioning at various places in Calicut and was moved to its new office at Thenjippalam in Malappuram.

Afte the Kannur university has been formed, Kannur, Kasargod and Wayanad.

It boasts about 427 affiliated colleges and 37 teaching institutes under it.

Some of the notable alumni from Calicut University are Anju Bobby George(athlete), M. N. Karassery(author), Dr K.K.N Kurup(historian), Shyamaprasad(film director). Ayyappan Pillai Ajayaghosh(organic Chemist).

Though it had seen its share of accusations and scandals, such as setting up its own private management colleges, it is a fact that Calicut University is the most searched University on the internet.

This year which marks its 50th year anniversary, have huge celebrations planned for the whole year ahead.

The celebrations start on July 29th, which the function will be inaugurated By Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

They also plan for a development of rupees 300 crores with the fund allotted to them.
