Pakistani man arrested from Rameshwaram

A Pakistani man was arrested from Rameshwaram for drug trafficking, days ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Rameshwaram.

At first, he said that he is a Srilankan national, but after being interrogated by at least four branches of police on Saturday, including special branch, crime branch and Q branch, it emerged that he was a Pakistani and that he had lied to the police that he was a Sri Lankan national.

The police initially identified the 67-year-old as Mohammed Kasim from Colombo. After interrogation, he was identified as Mohammed Yunus (67), son of Ali Mohammed from Karachi.

The interrogation revealed that he briefly lived in Colombo after marrying a Sri Lankan national when he came in contact with one Kamal, a drug trafficker in Colombo, police said.

After entering into a deal with Kamal, the suspect landed at Ammapettai in Thanjavur district on May 2 in an illegal ferry and proceeded to Ahmedabad to procure heroin from a contact suggested by Kamal.

Yunus told the police that he stayed in Ahmedabad for about a fortnight but failed to get the drugs from the contact. He also visited Bihar, Mumbai and Rajasthan before visiting Erwadi and met Abdul Ajeez, Kamal’s contact, a few days ago, police said.

Ajeez arranged a boat to ferry Yunus back to Sri Lanka, but the mission failed twice on July 16 and 17 as the sea was rough following the high-velocity wind, the police said.

Meanwhile, Ajeez became jittery on learning that Yunus was a Pakistan national and tipped off the police about his presence in the area.
