Family reunion turns tragic:5 killed in road accident at NH

After three years, Anjum Fatima Zaidi (35), along with her 13-year-old son Ali Mohamad Zaidi, had come from Tehran to Delhi to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr.

However, a tragic accident near Kalyanpuri on NH-24 in the wee hours of Wednesday ended what was supposed to be a happy family reunion.

All five people who went to receive the mother-son duo in a Toyota Innova SUV lost their lives.

Four more, including three children, are seriously injured.

Anjum received multiple head injuries and she is in a coma with minimal chances of survival.

The fatal accident took place around 3 am on Wednesday when the family, belonging to Meerut, were returning from IGI Airport after receiving Anjum and Ali.

After crossing Nizamudin, as they headed towards Gazipur, a dumper coming from the opposite direction lost control, broke the divider and rammed the Innova.

R Satya Sundaram, additional DCP, East, said that the impact of the collision was such that the Innova’s roof was blown away. All the victims died on the spot.

“The dumper was in high speed and the (driver) was either in an inebriated condition or fell asleep at the wheel leading to the accident. The Innova was literally mangled with all the victims trapped inside,” Sundaram said.

He added that the dumper dragged the Innova for a few metres and the latter rolled over three to four times before eventually landing upside down.

The dumper driver, identified as Manoj Kumar, is absconding. The deceased have been identified as Kamar Abbas Zaidi (55), his wife Fatima Zaidi (50), son Azhar (18), daughter Juhi (14) and a neighbour, Mehrazudin (36), who was driving the Innova.

Three of the injured – Ali Mohamad Zaidi (13), Sukena Fatima Zaidi (7) and Aabas Mehandi Zaidi (16) – were seated in the rear seat and hence received lighter injuries.

They were admitted to Lal Bahadur Shastri hospital in east Delhi and Aabas was discharged.

While Ali is in critical condition, Sukena is said to be out of danger. Mohamad Shahdab, one of the relatives living in Gurugram, said that Kamar was a garment merchant and his brother Kalbe a news reader in Tehran Radio.

“As Kalbe’s son Ali has a summer vacation of two months, they decided to come down for a family get-together. We want the hardest punishment for the errant driver,” Shahdab said.
