Before planning to design a terrace or balcony, it’s important to measure the area available. A smaller space is not a problem. Before you plan to buy furniture for your terrace, keep the following factors in mind:
1. Measure the area of the terrace/balcony:
The proper measurement can help to optimise costs and reduce the human error. For example the exact size of table or chair that fits in can be bought, not something big or small that does not fit or suit in the terrace.
2. Select the correct material for floor and furniture:
The floor and furniture in the terrace/balcony are exposed to external elements such as rain, sun, wind and therefore must be made of materials resistant to these forces. Otherwise they will not last long or will break or rot. Hence it is important to invest smartly in good quality furniture and flooring materials.
3. Protection against nature’s fury:
As the terrace/balcony is an area that is exposed to rain or sun, it is important to have some protective measures like umbrellas or pergolas. This will protect the things you have in the balcony and also allow you to use the it during a downpour or on a very hot and sunny day.
4.Proper lighting and electric installations:
The terrace / balcony, being outdoors often need twice as much lighting as a closed space. So depending on the weather conditions, you can determine how to benefit the most out of your space. For example in cold parts of India, you could even put a small outdoor fireplace. But, if you live in a hot part, you will need fans and even resources to drive away the mosquitoes.
5.Use your space as a garden:
If you want a small garden, and live in big cities, or have other space constraints, you can grow some small plants and creepers in your terrace or balcony. This would keep your surrounding area fresh and promote aesthetics as well.
