Vaastu for Home : Dos and Don’ts

Vastu Shastra, as the name says is a science. Earlier, there was a lot of folklore associated with Vastu to make it comprehensible to the common man. Unfortunately, a lot of the folklore gets carried forward and we forget the main essence of things.

Vaastu, as many believe, is not magic, but is a science which can help in solving the problem s in one’s life and could make that person happy and successful.

1.Kitchen– It is said that the kitchen should be placed in the South-East since it is the direction of fire. The reason for this is that the sun travels from the East to West via the south.

This is why the South-East gets maximum sunlight during the day time when the kitchen activities are on in full swing. The ample sunlight is a disinfectant and kills the germs which have the highest probability to breed in the kitchen. The sink should is also mentioned to be in the South-East for the very same reason.

2. The Dining Area – The dining area should be on the same level as the kitchen and in the centre of the room. This is where logic comes into play. It is functionally required that the dining is in close proximity to the kitchen. The dining table is always placed in the centre so that the chairs can be pulled out easily and it is easier to function.

3. Avoid Bathroom Near the Dining – It’s just a turn-off. The smell, the noise can ruin a good family meal.

4. Colour of the Dining Room – It is advisable to use yellow, peach, orange and green colours as they are reminiscent of food and nourishment. Hence they stimulate the appetite.

5. Furniture Arrangement – Furniture should be ideally aligned along the west and South walls. This is done because the North and East direction brings in the morning light which is beneficial for the mind and body. If the morning sun is blocked, the mind and body will automatically suffer.

6.Sleeping Position – The North Pole of the Earth is positively charged and the South Pole is negatively charged. Our head and feet to are said to have the same magnetic alignment. The head is supposed to be the positive end and the feet negative. Sine like charges repel and opposite charges attract, our body too behaves in the same way with the earth’s axis. If we sleep with the head in North, it is said to repel the Earth’s forces which are naturally unhealthy.

7. Study Room – The study should be in the West since it is accessed in the afternoons till evenings. In the ancient days, mornings used to be reserved for school. After noon, the sun starts travelling westwards and the ample sunlight is beneficiary. Today, you may change the direction of the study as per your requirement. It is also advisable to use lighter colours in the study to facilitate concentration and avoid unnecessary distraction and stimulation.

8. Trees and Landscaping – No trees should be planted in the North-East corner as they will block the beneficial morning rays of the sun. Large trees should not be planted near the structure as their roots can affect the foundation of the structure. If any tree is being removed, a new tree should be planted in its place within three months to restore ecological balance.

The above is a simplified deconstruction of generic rules for us to understand and realize that there is a very strong underlying reason to every Vastu rule that exists. If we too are implementing Vastu, do so after understanding the scientific reason and spiritual significance. It is important to identify the relevance of whatever we apply to our home with respect to the changing times.
