Venkaiah Naidu, first Vice-President to be born after independence : PM Narendra Modi

Shortly after taking oath as India’s 13th Vice-President, M Venkaiah Naidu took over the chairmanship of the Rajya Sabha, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the BJP leader and lauded his long political career.

“Venkaiah ji is the first Vice-President to be born after independence. He is also the only Vice-President so far to have a long political career, which he spent in the same premises. Venkaiah ji knows the working of Rajya Sabha very well, being in the house for so long,” Modi said.

Calling him the son of a farmer from Andhra Pradesh, Modi said, “A farmer understands the needs and problems of the farm very well.”

The PM also claimed it is also “for the first time” that all the top posts in the country are being held by those “with humble beginnings”.

Earlier today, Naidu took oath as India’s new Vice-President at a glittering swearing-in ceremony that was held in the Durbar Hall of Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi.

Nominated by the ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance, Naidu won the vice-presidential poll on August 5 against the Opposition’s Gopalkrishna Gandhi.
