Around 1,000 police personnel have been named for various police medals on the eve of Independence Day with Chhattisgarh Police’s platoon commander Shankar Rao becoming the lone recipient of top President’s Police Medal for Gallantry (PPMG) posthumously.
Rao laid down his life while leading his team in a fierce ambush with Naxals in April in 2015 in Naxal-infested Sukma.
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs statement, 990 police personnel have been chosen for President’s Medal on the eve of Independence Day of which 21 are from Karnataka Police.
While Rao is the lone recipient of President’s Police Medal for Gallantry, 190 were chosen for Police Medal for Gallantry, 93 for President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service to 93 personnel and 706 personnel for Police Medal for Meritorious Service (PMMS).
Of the 190 Police Medal for Gallantry, 53 went to Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), which is the lead force for anti-Naxal operations.
Andhra Pradesh Police (52), Jammu and Kashmir Police (25), Odisha Police (17) and the Border Security Force (14) followed CRPF.
Among 28 CBI officers chosen for awards was Superintendent of Police (Special Crime, Mumbai) Nandkumar Nair, who had solved Narendra Dabholkar’s murder case and arrested Sanatan Sanstha members. He was chosen for President’s Police Medal for distinguished service.
Twenty-nine CISF officials have been decorated with the President’s police medals for distinguished and meritorious service on the eve of Independence Day.
The awardees of the distinguished service medal include Inspector General (South Sector), Anand Mohan.
From the ITBP, 16 personnel were chosen for the awards. Three of them — Deputy Inspectors General Jaspal Singh and Ashok Kumar Negi and Inspector Om Prakash — were chosen for President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service. BSF won a total of 67 medals.
