Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav was detained by police in Unnao while he was on his way to Auraiya to attend a protest rally on Thursday.
Police had put up barricades near Hasanganj toll plaza on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway to prevent the former chief minister from proceeding towards Auraiya.
When Akhilesh’s carcade came to a halt by the barricades, the police detained him.
The SP president was headed to Auraiya, where on Wednesday several party workers were roughed up by cops. The workers were allegedly protesting police partiality and turned violent over not being allowed to accompany their candidate for the Zila panchayat chairperson post to the nomination room at the Collectorate in Auraiya.
Some SP leader were also detained on Wednesday following the clashes between the workers and police.
Akhilesh was escorted to a guest house in Hasanganj area of Unnao after his detention.
