At least 12 passengers of the premium train August Kranti Rajdhani Express have robbed of their cash and jewellery worth over Rs 10 lakh during their 17-hour journey from Mumbai to New Delhi on August 16. The train had departed from Mumbai on August 15 and the thefts are suspected to have taken place after 3 am on August 16 when the train entered the Kota division. A total of 10 FIRs have been registered in Delhi.
Last month, following three similar thefts on Rajdhani, passengers demanded installation of CCTV in coaches. “There has been a rise in such thefts; they mostly take place between Kota and Ratlam stations.”
WR general manager AK Gupta said, “We will form special teams to ensure security in premium trains.”
Delhi resident Rajesh Jain, who was travelling with his wife on the train, said, “We were in B-10 coach. The thieves took Rs 18,000, but left my wallet and iPhone 6.” He suggested that such premium trains should have an automatic door closure system so that unauthorised people do not enter the coach at night.
Piyush Singh, from Mumbai, said, “I was travelling to Mathura with 13 family members. Around 4 am two women, raised an alarm about their belongings missing.
When checked our baggage, we found that purses of three of my family members were missing. We lost around Rs 15,000 cash, but none of our phones were stolen.”
Other passengers who filed FIRs included Ramesh Kalra, who lost Rs 21,400, Aadhaar card, voter ID card, PAN card and a cellphone according to the FIR; Yogesh Aggarwal, who reported Rs 1.25 lakh was stolen; and Sahima Ahmed’s purse which contained nearly Rs 21,000 was stolen.
