Kudumbashree Mission expects a turnover of over Rs 40 crore from the Onam market, which will be opened on August 30. Over one lakh micro enterprises and 1,100 exclusive Onam market outlets will be set up across the state.
“Over 4,000 tons of chemical pesticide-free, farm-fresh vegetables will be sold at these Onam markets from 50,000 Kudumbashree farm groups across the state from August 30 to September 5. Various products from Kudumbashree micro enterprises will also be put up for sale,” Kudumbashree executive director S Harikishore said.
As many as 1,100 Onam markets will function at the district and village level, in which over one lakh farm and micro enterprises of Kudumbashree will take part, he said. Kudumbashree and LSGD jointly to organize Onam markets.
The Onam markets will also display other products from micro enterprises. It includes artistic products, decorative works, handicrafts, traditional delicacies, cut fruits pack and pickles. Cultural programmes will also form part of the fairs.
Currently, Kudumbashree women farm groups are involved in collective farming for the production of vegetables, fruits and cereals in 44,475 hectare area. The farm produce by Kudumbahsree groups will be sold at the markets in the same place. With farming, effective waste disposal and water resources management are also planned by the Kudumbashree groups.
For that, Kudumbashree has sought the support and participation of other organizations in the social and environment sectors. It also aims to ensure a plastic-free, pollution-free environment at Onam markets and efforts are on to promote cloth and paper bags, Kudumbahsree officials said. National Saras Mela will also be organized with Kudumbashree as the nodal agency at Malappuram from August 25 to September 4.
