Yesudas, wife undertakes a pilgrimage to Sabarimala

It was an elating experience for singer Dr. K J Yesudas when he undertook the pilgrimage to Sabarimala. “Manikanta or Ayyappa, the presiding deity at Sabarimala, is close to my heart and very special to me,” said singer K J Yesudas on his arrival at the hillock on Monday. While Dr. Yesudas had undertaken the pilgrimage to the temple many times, this was the first time, his wife, Prabha Yesudas, accompanied him, after observing the customary 41-day penance.

“It’s a great experience that melts our soul in divine ecstasy; I am unable to give a verbal description of the soulful feeling,” an elated Ms. Yesudas told The Hindu.

“Religion, caste, and creed have no place at the abode of Lord Ayyappa. Everyone is a ‘Swami,’ ‘Ayyappa,’ ‘Manikanta,’ or ‘Malikappuram’ (female pilgrim) here. Nowhere else can one find such sublime philosophy,” Mr. Yesudas said.

The Tantri, Kandararu Maheswararu Mohanararu, offered them prasadom after performing Neyyabhishekom.

The singer considers his chance to render the sacred lullaby, ‘Harivarasanam, Viswamohanam, Haridadheeswaram Aaradhyapaadukam…’, a blessing and the biggest achievement in his life. Mr. Yesudas, accompanied by wife, sang the sacred lullaby when the Melsanthi (head priest) was closing the sanctum sanctorum after extinguishing the lamps inside, keeping the Kedavilakku alone burning.
