In a tragic twist of fate, a grade 3 student from Telangana’s Wanarpathy district succumbed to his injuries after he had immolated himself last week. The fatal step was taken by the child after being allegedly thrashed by his teacher for not learning a Telugu poem.
The child who was chided and thrashed and felt humiliated and poured kerosene, and set himself ablaze, the parents alleged.
The minor had suffered 80% burns, and was undergoing treatment at the Government General Hospital in Mahbubnagar. Following the incident, District Education Officer, Sushindar Rao, formed a committee to probe the incident.
The child’s father, Jelakari Naganna, had filed a case against the teacher, alleging that his son killed himself due to humiliation. The police registered a case against the teacher on Saturday.
Speaking to the local media, Anand’s classmate said, “First, he (Anand) made some mistakes in his notebook but the teacher didn’t say anything. However, he was asked to write on the blackboard later, and repeated his mistake. After this, the teacher beat him with a stick.”
Meanwhile, education department officials agreed to compensate the deceased family with Rs 1.5 lakh and revenue authorities have assured help to the family, under government schemes.
When the incident broke out, activists demanded the immediate suspension and arrest of the teacher involved.
Hyderabad-based NGO Balala Hakkula Sangham (BHS) demanded the immediate suspension of the Head Master of the school. The NGO also demanded an arrest and criminal case against the accused teacher.
“The Education Department should be ashamed of this act, which is discouraging poor children from education,” the NGO said in a statement.
