Prices of vegetables in the market are soaring due to the huge demand during the Onam season. The price rise of vegetables in the public market has upset the household budget. Along with vegetable prices, there is a steep rise in the price of fruits.
Onion, which was priced at Rs 50 for 3 kg, now costs Rs 35 a kg. Prices of banana (njalipoovan variety) has soared to Rs 110 a kg. While nenthran banana prices have touched Rs 95, the cost of raw nenthran ranges between Rs 80 -90.
According to vendors, the change in prices of vegetables from Tamil Nadu resulted in the price hike. Compared to the public market, vegetable prices vary in important markets in the city, including Palayam and Chala. A variation in vegetable prices from Rs 5 to Rs 10 is found in nearby shops.
