A comeback of traditional harvest games marked Onam celebrations in certain parts of the city this year. Traditional sports such as `uriyadi,’ `goli kali,’ `kuttiyum kolum’ and kite-flying were organised by youth clubs and residents associations.
Scores of people gathered to watch the `uriyadi’ competition staged at Chenkalchoola colony on Onam. The game is all about breaking a decorated pot dangling overhead from a rope attached to a pulley. The pot is lowered to entice the challenger and pulled away suddenly from the reach of the contestant when he takes a shot at it with a bamboo pole. The participants step to the tune of the traditional `chenda.’ The competitors are hit with jets of water on their face to thwart their efforts to land a clear blow on the pot.
