Kerala State Co-operative Federation for Fisheries Development Limited (Matsyafed) launched ‘fresh fish’ Onam kit. Fisheries minister Mercykutty Amma launched the combo kits on Wednesday.
A combo kit, consisting of three varieties of fish, in different size and weight would be available at select Matyafed fish stalls in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Kozhikode, fisheries minister told reporters.
The special kits priced Rs 1000, Rs 750 and Rs 500 would be available from August 31 to September 3.
As many as 31 fish marts are operational at 31 different places across the state. Fish marts are aimed at providing quality fish, both sea fish and fresh water fish, to public.
Fish consumption in Kerala is on a higher side compared to many other states in the country. Even if the fish catch in the state is also high, people in the state depend on fish from nearby states, owing to the higher demand for fish varieties.
Fish marts are run by four member activity groups, comprising of select members from women self-help groups. The fish marts offer a variety of fish products such a read to cook, ready to eat, canned fish, fish pickles and fish cutlets. These products are prepared at the Matyafed’s Ice and Freezing plant in Kochi, which function as per the European union standards.
“The fish marts and combo kits are offered as a prelude to the government efforts to ensure health fish and fish productions. We have plans to tighten the laws to check the entry of chemically treated fish varieties into the Kerala market”, the minister said.
