Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated a suspension bridge built across the Chambal river at Kota, making it the first 6-lane cable suspended bridge in the Rajasthan.
The bridge, 1.4 km in length, is constructed at a cost of Rs 278 crore at Kota. It will benefit the residents of Hadouti region of Rajasthan.
The much-awaited ‘hanging bridge’ will help ease traffic congestion in Kota city and reduce travel time.
As an alligator sanctuary falls under the bridge over the Chambal River, a 700-metre stretch of the bridged has been suspended with cables, thus giving it the name, “hanging bridge”.
The work on the bridge began in November 2006 but the construction had to be halted for 5 years after one of its pillars collapsed in December 2009, which killed at least 48 people, including two engineers.
The work resumed in 2014. The ‘hanging bridge’ will facilitate a smooth movement of vehicles from Porbandar in Gujarat to Silchar in Assam.
The PM arrived in Udaipur on Tuesday to inaugurate some road projects, lay foundation stones for new highway projects and address a public gathering.
The national highway projects he laid foundation stones for are worth around Rs 15,000 crore, according to sources.
The PM also dedicated 11 completed national highway projects, covering a total length of about 873 km, to the nation. These included the six-lane cable-stayed bridge across River Chambal at Kota.
