US President Donald Trump spoke with Saudi King Salman on Wednesday and urged “all the parties in the Qatar dispute” to find a diplomatic resolution to end a crisis that has embroiled several Gulf countries, the White House said in a statement.
Saudi Arabia, along with the UAE, Bahrain, and Egypt, has cut political and trade ties with Qatar since June because of Doha’s support for Iran and Islamists.
Trump has visited Saudi Arabia this May to discuss their bilateral relations and signed various deals.
It was after this visit the Gulf nations led by Saudi Arabia decided to cut ties with Qatar for its alleged terror funding and terror links.
Trump told King Salman that a diplomatic resolution would fulfill a commitment – made when Trump visited Riyadh – to maintain unity while fighting terrorism.
The president and the king also discussed Hurricane Harvey. King Salman offered condolences to those who lost loved ones.
