Onam, the traditional festival of Kerala which is celebrated with much fanfare by the Keralites all around the globe comes with new trends in fashion especially in clothes every year.
The latest fashion is about combining tradition with modernity but rooted in ethnicity.
With Onam around the corner, textile shops all over Kerala are equipped with Onam fashion especially the queen wear of Onam, Kerala saree. The most amazing thing about Kerala saree is the number of transformations it has undergone over the years.
The traditional Kasavu saree or the Set mundu is still popular and much preferred during Onam days. This year even these traditional dresses are getting a twist, undergoing new experiments in the border.
“The main attraction this year is the Kerala saree embedded with Kalamkari border. Kalamkari blouses paired with the traditional kasavu saree is also popular nowadays,” says a salesgirl at Kalyan Silks, Calicut.
Another trending wear is the Kasavu saree with mural paintings. A large number of people are now opting for sarees with paintings of gods in which Radha-Krishna is a hit. Birds, butterflies, flowers and music instruments have also become the motifs in the popular buys.
Kuthampully sarees and tissue sarees are also in high demand. Beautiful skirts in white and gold teamed with crop tops, white and gold Kurtis are also in for youngsters whereas the salwar fashion is moving out. A kalamkari coat over any kurta is also in vogue.
Gents fashion is not at all left behind. Men’s wear is also having a makeover this Onam. Even though mundu is the default fashion, it is being paired with matching kurtas than the shirts. When it comes to material, semi silk and cotton are in fashion.
The traditional gold border has made way for silver or the mix of silver and gold. Also mural paintings, warli designs and prints are featuring in mundu.
The khadi and handloom clothes products are also seeing a surge in sale this Onam season.
