It was the mission of a group of techies from Infosys to do something unique and special for this Onam. They planned to create an Onam themed music video which would be composed, sung, scripted and shot by in-house talents.
All of them being passionate artists put their hearts into it and worked with a single mind. The final result was a mellifluous onapattu titled ‘Nirapunchiri’.
The whole idea behind creating Nirapunchiri was to evoke a sense of nostalgia and longing for Kerala traditions, culture and festivals.
This Onam is memorable and extra special for Anoop Balachandran and his team as their beautiful composition has gone viral on the internet with over 15,1703 views.
Anoop, who is currently working as Project Manager at Infosys is the composer of the song Nirapunchiri. He describes about how this melodious song was created. He says, “Infosys Trivandrum has an Annual Festival titled,’Utsav’. It is organized every year during the auspicious occasion of Onam and it comprises of a number of competitions and events.”
“For the event, the entire office is being divided into four teams. Last year, like every year before that, the crowd gathered for the event, expecting the usual, familiar, popular songs to be rendered by the teams on stage. Our lyricist Kiran and I got together and planned to do something unique. Our efforts resulted in the creation of this song. Our Team, Maveli Express did the unusual and mesmerized the audience. We ended up being the champions of Utsav last year,” Anoop added.

On how they decided to make it a video, Anoop elaborates, “I celebrated my birthday this May and some of my previous teammates, who are now working in different parts of the world, got together and sent me a poster titled ‘Nirapunchiri’. Back when we had composed the song, we had thought that some day we would do something more about it. So when I received this poster it was an inspiration. Something clicked and I said why don’t we go ahead and do it”.
Anoop adds that he mainly intended to promote their talents. “If you have a look at it, you will realize that all the people featured in the video are either employees or ex-employees of Infosys. Onam is a great time when families come together and with time, friends too become family. We wanted to show that part,” he said.
Nirapunchiri is being directed by Bipin Gopinath and cinematographed by Vineeth Vijayan. The video was released on August 18 and was launched by actor Indrajith Sukumaran.
Speaking about the astounding success of the onapattu Anoop says,” Most of the response we received directly, as well as indirectly over social media centered around how the music and the video reminded people of their villages and homes, and how they were now filled with an intense desire to be home this Onam. That for us is the ultimate accolade. That we have touched people to an extent where we bring people closer to their loved ones. This Onam, is something that we are truly proud of. And it is with this aim that we promote our video with the hashtag #spreadthesmile.”
