TMC MP Sultan Ahmed no more

Sultan Ahmed one of the founding-members of Trinamool Congress in 1997 passed away today after suffering a cardiac arrest. Ahmed was elected to the 15th Lok Sabha from Uluberia (Lok Sabha constituency) on a Trinamool Congress ticket. He also served as the Union Minister of State for Tourism in the Manmohan Singh government. He was 64.

Sultan Ahmed joined the Chatra Parishad (student wing of INC) while studying at Maulana Azad College in 1969 and the Youth Congress in 1973. He was district secretary of Youth Congress from 1978–80. Sultan Ahmed also was one of the founding-members of Trinamool Congress in 1997.

Ahmed, whom the CBI named in the FIR alongside a dozen senior leaders of Trinamool Congress, was summoned by the sleuths twice for interrogation. But he skipped the previous summon, pleading health issues.

The TMC MP had been quizzed recently by the Enforcement Directorate in the Narada sting footage case. ED had said that he was interrogated about his role and involvement in the case. The deceased leader had been purportedly seen receiving cash on the sting footage.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee used her twitter handle to condole the death of her colleague. Ahmed suffered a cardiac arrest at his house on Monday morning. He was rushed to a private hospital (Belle Vue Clinic) in Kolkata where doctors declared him brought dead.
