The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) informed the Supreme Court about Lok Sabha MPs and 98 MLAs are being probed for “substantial increases” in their assets. The names of these members will be submitted to the Supreme Court on Tuesday.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) told the apex court that the Income Tax Department has conducted preliminary investigations into their assets. The I-T probe has revealed that there had been “huge” increases in the Lok Sabha MPs’ assets and “substantial” increases in MLAs’ assets.
The Supreme Court was hearing a plea by NGO Lok Prahari on the disclosure of sources of income by the candidates contesting elections when they file nomination for elections. The petitioner has alleged a jump of up to 500 per cent in politicians’ assets.
The CBDT also told the top court that a preliminary assessment is underway of the assets of another nine Lok Sabha MPs, 11 Rajya Sabha MPs and 42 MLAs.
The apex court directed the government to place the necessary information in this regard before the court. The plea has claimed that the candidates while filing their nomination papers were disclosing their assets, assets of their spouse, children and other dependents, but they do not reveal the sources of income.
