Girl made to stand in boys washroom for not donning uniform

An 11-year-old girl studying in the fifth standard at a private school near here was allegedly made to stand in boys washroom by a woman teacher as a “punishment” for not wearing school uniform.

However, the government today stated the student was made to stand near the boys washroom for not wearing the uniform.

Earlier in the day, a large number of parents and locals held a protest at the school in R C Puram area in Hyderabad over the incident which occurred last Saturday.

“Based on the complaint lodged by the girl’s father, the RC Puram police today registered a case against the PET (physical education training) teacher on charges of wrongful confinement, criminal intimidation, and insulting under relevant sections of the IPC,” ACP (Miyapur Division) S Ravi Kumar said.

The government has ordered a probe into the matter and asked the district education officer to submit a report.
The girl’s father had yesterday approached city-based NGO Balala Hakkula Sangham over the incident.

He claimed that the PET teacher did not even bother to ask his daughter the reason for not wearing the uniform and dragged her to the boys washroom.

“The teacher did not even bother to listen to my child’s explanation that a note was written by us in her diary, requesting the school to allow her to attend the classes without the uniform for one day.

“However, she dragged my child and asked her to stay for a few minutes inside the boys washroom as a punishment for not wearing the uniform,” the girl’s father said.

He said the “act of abuse” had left a bad impact on his daughter and hurt her dignity.

“Now my child is not ready to face her classmates as she is feeling ashamed,” he said.

The teacher, however, denied the allegations and told media persons today that the girl was standing near the boys washroom and was never asked to stand inside it.

The incident was condemned by Telangana IT Minister K T Rama Rao. He said he would take up the matter with Deputy Chief Minister and Education Minister Kadiyam Srihari.

“Ridiculous & absolutely inhuman. Will take it up with Hon’ble Deputy CM education for appropriate action on the school,” he tweeted.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Kadiyam Srihari, who handles the education department, said appropriate steps would be taken after officials submit a report after visiting the school.

The two officials, who visited the school, have confirmed that the student was made to stand near the boys washroom for not wearing the uniform, a government release said tonight.

The officials have been told that the PET teacher has been removed from her job.

The officials would submit a report on the incident and action taken by the school management on the matter, the release added.
