After 7 decades of unhindered practice, India’s favorite veteran criminal lawyer Ram Jethmalani, announced his retirement from the field this week. The 94-year-old man, assured that he will come back stronger and harder to fight the “corrupt forces” who have “let down” the nation.
An unhesitant Jethmalani said the NDA government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has repeated the canards of the previous UPA government.
“The country is not in a good shape. The previous and the current governments both have let down the nation very badly,” he said earlier.”It is the duty of the members of the bar and all good citizens to rise to this great calamity,” he added.
He was speaking at a function organized by apex bar body, the Bar Council of India, to felicitate new Chief Justice of India Justice Dipak Misra.
“I am here just to tell you I am retiring from the profession but I am taking on a new role as long as I am alive. I wish to combat the corrupt politicians that have been brought into the position of power and I hope the condition of India will take good shape,” Jethmalani concluded with authority.
Throughout his career, Jethmalani has been known for his bold ways to deal with high-profile cases, apart from his connections with some of the most powerful people in the country.
Known primarily for his aptitude in fighting criminal cases, his persona in the courtroom has been lauded by many, primarily for his minute detailing of facts while cross-questioning witnesses. During his tenure, the high-spirited lawyer managed to win a slew of high-profile case, making him one of the highest paid in the field – his price tag said to be Rs 25,00,000. However, he has also fought many cases without charging fees.
Apart from having a fantastic career in law, Jethmalani also served as the Union Minister of Law from 1999 to 2000. However, his tryst with politics started all the way back in the early 1970s when he contested his first ever election as an Independent candidate from Ulhasnagar in Maharashtra.
Jethmalani has had spats with the BJP government earlier when he was removed as the law minister, and even now he has strongly criticized the leaders belonging to the ruling party.
He recently wrote an open letter to PM Modi, blaming him for the slowdown of the economy in the country, poverty, the plight of the poor and a growing sense intolerance.
