UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Priyanka Chopra met Syrian children, young people and displaced citizens during her two-day visit to Jordan this week.
On the first day, Priyanka visited a UNICEF supported Makani (which means “My Space” in Arabic) centre in a host community in Amman.
Later, she visited the Za’atari refugee camp on the second day, meeting girls at a UNICEF-supported school and two Makani centres that provide psychosocial support services to both young boys involved in child labour and young girls who are survivors of child marriage.
“What do you say to a family that just doesn’t see any hope of going back to their home, and not their home, but their country? And even if they do, after a war like the war that has happened in Syria, it will take decades for them to rebuild again,” Priyanka Chopra said.
With a population of around 80,000, Za’atari is one of the largest Syrian refugee camps in the world, and is considered as the fourth largest city in Jordan.
The Syrian refugee crisis is the largest humanitarian crisis since the end of World War II. Countries neighbouring Syria are hosting over 5 million registered Syrian refugees, including nearly 2.5 million children.
“I’m talking about a humanitarian crisis. This can be an entire generation of kids that could turn to extremism because they didn’t get education. This could be an entire generation of children that can be hostile towards the world because they weren’t helped,” Priyanka added.
The popular Bollywood actress chatted with the girls and spread some joy by playing with them.
Priyanka Chopra is being greatly appreciated by everyone for her good gesture towards these kids.
