Abu Dhabi Police seized twenty-seven kilos of fake gold jewellery from 26 shops in the capital on Monday.
Eleven of the shops selling the counterfeit jewellery — which mimicked styles from a well-known brand — are owned by one person, police said.
Brig Rashid Bourshid, head of the criminal investigation department at Abu Dhabi Police, said police found the jewellery after being contacted by the company’s brand manager to report commercial fraud.
“A team was formed and raided the shops where owners sold jewellery imitating famous trademarks to earn huge amounts of money illegally,” said Brig Bourshid.
The jewellery was found hidden in boxes behind wooden shelves.
Shop owners were referred to Public Prosecution for further legal action.
Brig Bourshid urged customers to ensure the items they are buying match the international brand and to report any commercial fraud to police.
