Delhi and NCR (National Capital Region) will remain silent for the upcoming Diwali as the Supreme Court decided to ban the sale of firecrackers in the region. Since the ban extends to November 1 this will be a silent Diwali in NCR.
Justice A K Sikri headed the Supreme Court Bench on October 6 on a plea seeking re-establishment of the banning of firecracker’s sale in Delhi and NCR. In the previous year, the apex court suspended all the licenses which permit the sale of fireworks, wholesale and retail within the National Capital Region.
Later, the court on September 12 lifted the regulations and which enabled the sale of fireworks. During the hearing on the plea seeking re-establishment of last year’s order, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) also supported the application.
Advocate Gopal Shankarnarayanan, appearing for petitioner Arjun Gopal, had affirmed the court that there will a huge rise in pollution due to the fireworks similar to previous year if the ban is lifted by the court.
