Separatist leader finds place in popular poster, inquiry launched

Jammu and Kashmir government faces major embarrassment over posters put up across the district showed the Dukhtaran-e-Millat leader Asiya Andrabi image in the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ campaign.

The posters put up across the district showed the Dukhtaran-e-Millat leader Asiya Andrabi image in the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ campaign by the child care wing of the social welfare department in Anantnag district’s Breng block, which is led by BJP MLA Sajjad Gani Lone.

The separatist leader Asiya Andrabi holds place as a “role model” alongside the likes of Indira Gandhi and Mother Teresa, the Jammu and Kashmir government has launched an enquiry into the photographic campaign.

Asiya Andrabi is a separatist leader in the Kashmir Valley, known for her notorious anti-India speeches and for unfurling the Pakistan flag on Indian soil. She is currently behind bars for sparking tension and inciting violence in the Valley after the killing of Hizbul commander Burhan Wan.

The CDPO of Breng, Shameema Akhter, was suspended over the incident.

The poster also features a picture of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, former prime minister Indira Gandhi, astronaut Kalpana Chawla, tennis player Sania Mirza, retired Indian Police Service officer Kiran Bedi, playback singer Lata Mangeshkar, and other women achievers.

Police officers and several other local and civil authorities were present at the campaign launch on Wednesday. The poster is being slammed by many sections of society and is being called as a part of the ‘appeasement policy’ by the J&K government.
