Double taxation to hit screens soon, Mersal release face unpredictability

Theatre owners had decided to shut down their doors after the double taxation by the Tamil Nadu government. The decision if implemented could hurt both the theatre owners and the audiences who buy the tickets.

Theatres and multiplexes across the TN have decided to open ticket bookings for the upcoming Deepavali only after reading the final government order which will be released tomorrow.  The order could levy a 10% Entertainment Tax included by the Tamilnadu Government on 27th September 2017, it will add another burden to make the GST affected film businesses even worse.

On the basis of high ticket rates in the theatres of Tamil Nadu, the theatre and multiplex industry owners presided over by Abirami Ramanathan, president of the Tamil Nadu Cinema Theatre Owners Federation. The meeting consulted on the five-point proposal made by actor Vishal, general secretary of Nadigar Sangam and president of Tamil Film Producers Council. Raising several issues, the actor-cum-producer had said that no cinema exhibitor could sell tickets above the government scheduled rates and food products should be sold only on MRP.

Theatres and multiplexes are working on the final pricing they want to fix on Monday. The rates and future actions will be made with the response from viewers.

City based film Theater Rohini Silver Screen has decided to continue selling tickets with the old rate itself. The theater opened their counters for actor Vijay’s upcoming film Mersal, which is slated for release for Deepavali. “We have had a blockbuster opening with the bookings. The tickets for first two days were sold within few minutes,” Nikilesh Surya, executive director of Rohini Silver Screens said. “As we talk, tickets for the third day are being sold,” he added.

Sources in Thenandal Studios Limited said the movie would be released for Deepavali. Clearance from the Censor Board is pending as the Animal Welfare Board of India has not granted approval, sources said.
