At the face of escalating tensions worldwide due to various terrorist attacks, the quadrilateral coordination group (QCG), consisting of Afghanistan, China, Pakistan and the United States, met in Muscat, Oman to rethink the possibility of a political settlement between the Taliban and the Afghan government.
The meeting came amid international attempts to revive peace talks with the Afghan Taliban. As the meeting took place, India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval flew to Kabul yesterday to hold talks with the Afghan leadership.
“The Ministry of External Affairs said Doval held talks with his Afghan counterpart Hanif Atmar and “emphasised that bilateral and sincere regional cooperation is important for peace, security and stability in the region”.
“Both sides welcomed the opportunities created by the new US strategy for bringing peace and security to Afghanistan. It was agreed to further strengthen strategic dialogue and consultations for achieving the shared objectives,” the MEA said in a statement.
While India is not a part of the QCG, it is keeping a tab on the developments.
India has a number of interests in Afghanistan, including political, economic and security.
