Terrorist involved in the 2008 India blasts could be released by Pakistan

Hafiz Saeed whose term of imprisonment will come to an end this month is yet to hear good news as a review board of the Lahore High Court on granted two days to Punjab government to file charges against Jamaat-ud-Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed and his four aides.

Hafiz Saeed, is a declared terrorist by the UN, U.S. and India for his involvement in 2008 Mumbai attacks was produced before the review board comprising Justice Yawar Ali, Justice Abus Sami Khan and Justice Aalia Neelum. The proceedings were held in-camera.

On Saturday authorities had withdrawn terrorism charges against Hafiz Saeed and Jamaatud Dawa and kept him under detention under Maintenance of public Order (MPO) paving way for the possible release.

Hafiz Saeed challenged his detention in Lahore High Court in February. His lawyer A.K Dogar had urged the court to order release of Hafiz Saeed and his four aides since no fomal charges have been filed against his client after so many months of detention.

Saeed and JuD were already banned by the UN while U.S. has put US$10 million bounty on the arrest of Hafiz Saeed. Hafiz Saeed was arrested in a crackdown in January this year and put under house arrest. His lawyer A.K. Dogar told the court on Tuesday that the Punjab government has once again extended Hafiz Saeed’s detention for three months.

Pakistan’s Election Commission had stalled JuD’s attempt to enter the political mainstream by rejecting application of Milli Muslim League party which was formed to mainstream Saeed’s banned Jamaatud Dawa.
