His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has issued a new tax law keeping in mind the health of the UAE citizens.
According to the official portal of the UAE government, the excise tax is being levied to reduce consumption of unhealthy and harmful commodities while also raising revenues for the government that can be spent on beneficial public services.
The rates of excise tax in the UAE are 50% for carbonated drinks, 100% for tobacco products and 100 % for energy drink. The tax also extends to the components used in the making of the above mentioned products and the constituents that induce the same effects of the above mentioned products.
The consumers will need to pay more for goods that are harmful for physical well-being of the humans and/or the environment. The decree shall become effective one month after being published in the Official Gazette.
