Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, CPM State Secretary find himself in the middle of a controversy. The car he used while addressing a mob in a reception to the Jana Jagratha Yatra has belonged to a hawala accused.
Kodiyeri took a ride in an open luxury car of Mini Cooper in a reception in koduvalli for the ruling CPM’s statewide yatra. The car was owned by Grama Panchayat Member Karat Faisal priced about Rs 44 lakh. The Controversy erupted after BJP leader K. Surendran posted on Facebook that Karat was an accused in a hawala case.
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) had seized an Audi Q7 car from Faisal’s home that was registered in the name of the wife of Shahabaaz, an accused in a gold smuggling case in 2013. However, Faisal, a businessman, insisted there were no cases against him over this, though the DRI has charged all the other accused in this case. Kodiyeri told media persons that the car was provided by the local committee. In such situations, one never checks who owns the car, he asserted. The CPM, however, is yet to officially respond to the issue.
