Driving a Puducherry registered car would get more complicated soon. The Kerala Transport Department is compiling a list of vehicles and their respective owners having a registration in Pudhucherry or other states to evade road tax. Most likely the owners will be notified from today onwards.
Vehicle owners will be required to present their identification documents to prove their addresses. The address has to match the place of the vehicle’s registration. The Transport Department said that most of the vehicle owners they had zeroed in are famous peoples. The Department plans to form special squads to track such vehicles in all its offices. ”We will take legal action if the address is found to be fake. We will also make them pay the tax,’ an officer in the Transport Department said.
In Kerala, vehicles with a price tag of up to Rs 5 lakh are taxed 6 percent of their price. Vehicles that cost between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 10 lakh are taxed at 8 percent while vehicles that cost between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 15 lakh are taxed at 10 percent. Vehicles that cost between Rs 15 lakh and Rs 20 lakh are taxed at 15 percent and anything costlier at 20 percent.
