Arabic book withdrawn over improper content, investigations to take place

On the 2nd of November, the Saudi Arabia authorities pulled out a book due to its obscene situations.

The award winning author Badriya al-Bishr’s book was withdrawn from bookstores after readers denounced some passages as pornographic, sparking controversy in the ultra-conservative kingdom.

The author of the ’Thursday’s Visitors’ is also a well-known columnist who often focuses on the daily struggles of the women in Saudi Arabia.

The book records a young woman’s self discovery through Thursday get-togethers where women share their joys and sorrows. But certain content of the book was deemed as sexual and inappropriate.

In a Twitter conversation between a reader and a prominent bookstore chain of Saudi, the reader criticized the store for not reviewing the book properly before stocking it, particularly in the children’s section. The reader also acknowledges her mistake in not checking the book as well. The store replied by thanking the reader for her observation with a word that the book has been withdrawn.

Although there was no comment from Badriya al-Bishr, another Saudi Twitter user responded that they should just skip the page and to stop being dramatic.

The spokesperson of the ministry too replied with the book being withdrawn and an investigation will take place to look into the matter.
