Indian cricket team captain and new sports sensation Virat Kohli celebrated his 29th birthday with his teammates after the 2nd T20 against New Zealand in Rajkot on Sunday. However, India lost the match against NZ for 40 runs. Indian team’s captain is expected to travel with the team for the series decider at Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday.
Wishes are flooding through social media from Virat’s friends, fans, colleagues, including both former and current cricketers. The sporting young sensation of India has scored 49 international centuries (32 in ODIs and 17 in Tests) out of which 28 have come away from home (outside India). The ODI centuries are just behind Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar’s 49 centuries.
Kohli made his international debut in 2008 against Sri Lanka and recently became the fastest man to breach the 9000-run mark. Kohli is ranked No.1 in ODIs and is currently the leading run-getter in the format in 2017. He has been India’s most prolific chaser since his ODI debut and has scored 16 hundreds in successful run chases for India so far.
Kohli was named the skipper of the Indian Test team after MS Dhoni retired from the format in the middle of the Australia tour in 2014 December. Kohli then led his side to a historic triumph in Sri Lanka when India bounced back after losing the first Test to win the series 2-1. Kohli has not looked back since.
The same year India annihilated South Africa, West Indies, whitewashed New Zealand at home, England, Bangladesh, and Australia in a closely-fought series. Kohli has led India to 19 victories out of 27 Tests as captain so far. Kohli is the only one batsman to hit a double century in 4 consecutive Test series.
